“An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” by Ambrose Bierce

Peyton Farquhar is set to be hanged, after attempting to blow up a bridge during the American Civil War. But hanging is an imprecise method of execution, and Farquhar is a lucky man. Will his escape be permanent or will he get caught again? Or is there something else to Farquhar all together? The story is notable for being one of the very first to feature a twist ending.
